Brendon James is an aspiring young artist from Virginia, grinding day in, day out to get the exposure and recognition he deserves. Whilst speaking with Brendon, I could sense the determination that this young man carries with him. It is refreshing to speak with an artist as passionate and motivated as Brendon James, for the fact that he will do anything in his power to achieve is goals.

He has been working round the clock pushing out tracks back to back to gain as much exposure as possible, and it is truly inspiring. Brendon James raw, ‘in your face’ style brings back memories of artists such as MF Doom, and personally, I can’t get enough of it.

Brendon released two singles yesterday, and is putting out a mixtape today. This man is determined to make Hip Hop his career, and he’s only headed up. Without further adieu, I give you the Brendon James Interview.

  • Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?
I'm from Virginia beach Virginia. I've been in and out of my environment a lot lately so yes everywhere I go and where I've been play a major part in my creativity. I lived in Minnesota for a month and adapted to the gritty cold gloomy atmosphere which ads to the rawness of my rhymes.

  • What’s your background like? Where do you stand on the music scene in your area?
I come from a cut throat battle like background I used to freestyle during lunch at school. The music scene in my area I have a strong but loyal cult following and since I first put out my freestyles on my Instagram I became pretty viral and started making lots of noise through the airwaves.

  • What did you start doing first, producing or rapping? How did you get started?
I first started rapping thinking I could impress a crush and it ended up becoming a hobby, soon a special talent.

  • Do you have anyone that you consider your mentor? How has their help or advice shaped you?
I consider Joe Budden one of my biggest mentors of all with the advice of being myself no matter how I market myself and to always stay consistent. Live by the gun. You'll have no regrets.

  • What is one experience in life that, without it, you wouldn’t be the artist you are today?
Meeting people and being in 2 psychiatric hospitals this year have both brought out the raw side of me.   But people most of all are who I'm really for. I'm pretty genuine

  • What do you hope to accomplish this year?
What I hope to accomplish this year is to get paid off a lot of my music maybe perform some of it as well but most importantly stay consistent and hungry.

  • Who are your biggest influences and what do you like about them the most?
I look up to a lot of rappers but the main few are Griselda Conway the machine, Benny the butcher, and Westside Gunn. They all keep my pengame sharp and each verse has me ready to make music.

  • How would you describe your own style?
My style is unorthodox. It's sharp it's witty its aggressive and it's unique. People say I have my own sound.

  • In what ways has your newest music changed from when you first started?
My newest music is more polished and more layered compared to my older material and it ages well.

  • What are the main inspirations for the lyrics you write?
Pain and emotion are my inspirations. I always put my heart out in each and every verse I write. Or older songs that I grew up on to get inspired by.

  • What would be your dream venue in which to perform?
My dream venue to perform at is The Norva here in my home state of Virginia.

  • What’s a song you have stuck in your head these days?
Conway the machine-Voices is kinda stuck in my head lately. But it keeps me polished.
