In preparation for the initial release of this single, Cole deleted everything off of his Instagram and went ghost for a little bit. True J Cole fans know that when he removes all his posts from his Instagram account and removes his photo, somethings coming very soon. To no avail, Cole starting releasing cryptic messages in multiple posts on his account to build the hype up for what was to come. After announcing the tracks release date that upcoming Friday, fans patiently waited to hear this track. In the song, Cole addresses many problems in the rap game right now and things circling the genre. The whole idea of the song being called "Middle Child" is that Cole feels as though he is in between the OG's and the newcomers to the genre. By talking about this, he says that he has learned from the OG's while still taking some methods and using the hype for the new age rappers to improve his abilities. Another big thing that Cole brings up in this song, is the situation with the whole stigma around the new age rappers and the promotion of drugs... As many know, Cole is against the whole new age drug rapping part of the industry, but he still respects the grind of the artists and likes to see them get paid.
